Issues

Senator Caroline Benoit is passionate about improving the foster system throughout the nation. Benoit became acquainted with the foster system at a young age due to her mother’s social work.  Her connection with the foster care system grew deeper when she was 12 years old and her family decided to take in a set of 6 year old twins who were in the foster system. They lived with Benoit’s family for 2 years before they were adopted by the Benoits. Senator Benoit learned from a young age that her brother and sister were lucky to be kept together and adopted by a loving family but that other children were not as lucky. The state of Utah already has relatively good training for prospective foster parents and families but there are other states with less required training and lenient licensing rules that can endanger children. Senator Benoit believes that there should be a uniform process, with thorough training and clear requirements for becoming a licensed foster parent throughout the nation.  The privatization of foster care is another issue directly related to the improvement of the foster system. Privatization would mean private entities would control the foster system rather than the government.
